Grid 3 - John Smith.

John Smith earns Grid 3 honors.

John Smith was an Englishman who improbably became the Patriots kicker in the 70s. The first NFL game he ever saw - he played in! He led the league in scoring a couple times and made the Pro Bowl, but he's best remembered as the guy in the "snowplow game." In a December 1982 blizzard, the Dolphins and Patriots were scoreless nearing the finish. During a timeout, a snowplow operator drove onto the field and cleared a space for Smith to get a clean kick. The Dolphins were outraged, but the refs didn't say anything. Smith made the kick for an infamous 3-0 victory.

Grid 2 Salutes Jim Zorn

When the Seahawks and Buccaneers entered the NFL together 50 years ago as expansion teams, Jim Zorn was Seattle's first-ever QB. They were bad, but it was fun watching the slippery Zorn run for his life regularly -- and they were better than Tampa Bay. By their third year, Seattle was a winning team, and Jim Zorn-to-Steve Largent was a feared combo. Zorn later bounced around the league, playing his final game in 1987 with...the Buccaneers.

Stanley Morgan Grid

Grid 1: Stanley Morgan Grid

The first grid honors classy New England receiver Stanley Morgan, who in the late '70s and '80s bucked the trend of flashy touchdown celebrations by simply handing the ball to the ref.

"When you get to the end zone," he said, "act like you've been there before."

He would know. He hit paydirt 72 times.
